“Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging-on of an uncompleted task.”
—William James
When it comes to getting homes, offices, and their lives organized, many people resist getting professional help. They may feel that they “should” be able to get organized, or be embarrassed to have anyone know their “dirty little secret” or even wonder if it’s worth paying for professional input because they feel they are beyond help.
Here are 6 great reasons for hiring a Professional Organizer. Is it time for you to hire one too?
1. I TRY AND I TRY BUT I CAN NEVER GET ORGANIZED.
If you’ve been consistently trying to organize your home or office but aren’t seeing results than it’s time to call in the professionals. A Professional Organizer can look at your current systems and habits and help you see where you can make changes to create a more organized space. A professional organizer can also help to determine if your organizing goals and plans are realistic for you and your family and the space you live in.
2. I DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START.
When you are faced with disorganized space it can be so overwhelming you don’t even know where to begin. The great thing about a Professional Organizer is they always know where to start and they can help you keep the end in sight. A professional organizer can also give homework assignments to keep you moving forward in-between sessions and can help you set specific tasks to help you achieve your organizing goals. Even a one-time consultation is often enough to get you on your way toward a more organized space.
3. I WANT TO DEVELOP ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS FOR MYSELF.
If your goal is to become a more organized person yourself, hiring a professional organizer for a few sessions can be a great benefit for learning the best way to organize for you. This is especially true if you want to learn more about your organizing style and the systems that are the best match for you. Just a few sessions can teach you a lot about the way you’ve organized in the past and what will be sustainable for you in the future.
4. I NEED MOTIVATION AND ACCOUNTABILITY.
Professional Organizers provide plenty of motivation as they work alongside of you. There's nothing like a standing appointment to keep you on track with your organizing. Not only are you investing money into getting organized, you are setting aside the time as well. Scheduled organizing sessions mean that tasks get done even when you don’t feel like doing them. Not only that, an organizer provides some accountability so, even when you don't have a session, you know your organizer will be asking if you did your homework. Just knowing that may make it harder to avoid those planned organizational tasks. E-organizing can be an affordable way to get the motivation and accountability you need even from a distance.
5. I HAVE A DEADLINE.
Organizing deadlines can come up for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you are putting your house up for sale, expecting a new baby, or have an aging parent or adult children returning home. Or you may be facing an ultimatum from a boss, a landlord, a roommate or a spouse telling you that you need to clean up your mess by a certain date or else! Regardless of the reason for the time constraint, a professional organizer can help you figure out what you need to do to get organized by D-day. Just make sure she/he has the time, experience and staffing resources available to help you through to the finish line.
6. I HAVE A SPECIFIC ISSUE OR DISABILITY THAT AFFECTS MY ORGANIZATIONAL ABILITY.
If you have a specific diagnosis like depression, OCD, a shopping addiction, ADD, or chronic disorganization etc., working with an experienced professional organizer (while you continue with therapy, of course) can assist you with the practical organizing solutions in light of your unique challenges.
It's also a great idea to work with a professional organizer if you are going through a major life transition such as downsizing, the death of a family member, or a divorce. Just make sure your organizer has experience in assisting clients with your issues!
